Allies For Sexual Minorities - Prevention of Self-Harm and Suicide

In a partnership with the Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation (SAAF) and the University of Arizona Museum of Art (UAMA),  the program of Art in Medicine provided a leadership educational program to empower attendees with skills necessary to identify signs of self-harm as well as what to do when these arise, with a focus on the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LBGTQ) community. The program focused on LBGTQ issues in the community and suicide prevention.    The art component of the program was based on the Mapping Q project from the UAMA. Participants created artwork based on mapping their interpretation of the academic workplace. This interpretation was in the form of mapping identifiers of male, female, gay, straight, queer in signage, artwork, displays etc.,; mapping areas of negative work environments as well as areas of inclusion and comfort; mapping their ideal space.  Artwork was on display in the café of the Health Sciences Education Building during the month of July. This program was sponsored by a grant generously given from the Office of Diversity and Inclusion at the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix.
