Ceramic Tiles

Ceramic Tiles with the Zentangle® Method

Supplies

  • Glazed ceramic tiles (Home Depot)

  • Sharpie markers in various colors

  • Rubbing alcohol (91% strength!)

  • Eyedropper

  • Rubber glove

  • Black Sharpie markers (fine and ultrafine)

  • Fixative

  • Clear coat

  • Washi tape

Steps:

1. Clean the ceramic tile with soap and water; dry.

2. Color the tile with Sharpie markers – any colors, any patterns, or just be random. Let dry (only takes a couple of minutes)

3. Drop alcohol on tile with eyedropper in random spots. With a gloved (optional) hand, can tilt the tile to let some of the colors run together.  Be careful, though!  Too much running and color combination and you will end up with brown mud.  This is the experimental stage – you can drop a little at a time, letting it dry in between and then drop some more alcohol to re-bloom. Once you are satisfied, let dry completely (5-10 minutes, if that)

4. Now, more fun!  Using a black Sharpie, draw your chosen tangle patterns onto the tile to create an abstract work of art.

5. Once you are satisfied, spray a light coat of fixative on the tile. Be careful not to spray too close, as you do not want to re-activate the alcohol.  Let dry (15-30 minutes)

6. Finally, spray a layer of clear coat to seal it.  I like the glossy finish, but you might like to try a matte finish.

7. You can finish the edges of the tile by applying washi tape or duct tape.

8. Reflect and enjoy!
