Diversity and Inclusion – Suicide Awareness and Prevention

The Program of Art in Medicine with support from the Office of Diversity and Inclusion once again offered a leadership program this past summer that focused on Diversity and Inclusion as well as Suicide Awareness and Prevention.    This 2-part program consisted of promoting education and awareness on topics of cultural appropriation and micro-aggressions.  In addition, participants learned how to recognize signs of depression and self-harm and what to do when these arise by becoming trained as QPR Gatekeepers for suicide awareness and prevention.  Participants also created artwork that illustrated or symbolically represented a space where they felt uncomfortable or unwelcome as well as their ideal space, a space where they would feel free from oppression.  They were then invited to submit their artwork for display at an exhibit held in the café of the Health Sciences Education Building.  26 people participated in part or the entire program.

Comments on the exhibit:

“I am blown away by the power of emotions that can be depicted by fellow students.  I feel like I can relate to what others are felling.  The show was a great way to spend a few minutes away from the classroom and appreciate the beauty of experience through art.”

“Fantastic show! Love the explanations with insight.  Great outlet for high pressure situation.”
