This exhibit features artwork from the Year 1 PAL Elective Course "Every Life Counts." In this elective course from the Personalized Activity Learning Block, first year medical students had thoughtful discussions on disparities related to race, ethnicity, culture and gender, with regard to social context and began work to reduce stigmatization and biases. Students investigated language, symbols, and images and explored how they can express personal identities as well as communicate rigidly traditional ideology. Students created artwork as a response to these discussions. These works explore how some of the things we say convey messages of non-acceptance. In addition, students were asked to re-frame the uncomfortable spaces or events into an ideal one. Through visual communication, the broader issues facing members of our campus can be readily seen and serves to educate all members of our community. It is hoped that through this exhibit, a community wide dialogue is created to support members of diverse communities, fostering more inclusive environments, and transforming our campus into to one that is safe, accepting and supportive.
