Practicing medicine in Tempe has radically changed since the late 19th century. Early Arizona had no hospitals. Doctors had home offices or made house calls until March 2, 1944, when the Tempe Clinic Hospital opened for business. While medicine still had a long way to go in the late 1800s, physicians in territorial Arizona remained at the leading edge of medical practice and knowledge. Viewers learned how local residents recruited their first trained physician, Dr. John L. Gregg, predecessor to many talented physicians, including Tempe’s first mayor, Dr. Fenn J. Hart, and discovered how Tempe doctors went beyond health care to make significant contributions to their community and to Arizona.
