Exercises in Observation

The theme for October's Phoenix Art Museum visit was "Observation: Is there a difference between seeing and observing?". Attendees studied portraits and were asked to write down everything they saw in the artwork. After discussing what they observed, students were asked to do the exercise again noting only the things they found interesting or aesthetically pleasing. They did this activity for two different portraits and compared their final lists to see how they were similar and how they were different. Attendees also studied the exhibit Move: The Modern Cut of Geoffrey Beene. How did the designer's observation of the body and movement influence his ability to create silhouettes that moved naturally with the human form? Participants also engaged in an artwork scavenger hunt, where they selected a piece and wrote five sentences about it. Groups traded their sentences and then tried to find the piece of art based on the five descriptive sentences they were given. The final discussion centered on how encounters and documentations of patients change based on seeing vs observing.
