By encouraging observation in the art museum context, students build the skill without accessing prior knowledge that can sometimes work to inhibit observation in favor of “diagnosis.” In this session, participants were challenged to observe and describe artwork purely by using language to note differences in formal elements such as color, line, texture, while trying to avoid interpretation. Participants learned that this is not so easy to do. This led to an interesting discussion on the difference between observation and interpretation. Participants were also challenged to determine if a visual description of something is more valuable than a written descriptio. Physicians use the SOAP note to have a standardized format for organizing patient information. Formal observation is a part of the SOAP note, and interpretation becomes part of the Assessment. Viewing and interpreting art reminds us of the importance of these core patient care skills.
