Meet Mira Milas MD, FACS
Professor of Surgery and Chief of Endocrine Surgery
University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix
Describe your morning - what time do you get up, what do you do first, next and what is for breakfast?
I remember discovering many summers ago that it is almost daylight at 5 am in Arizona. That seems to be my wakeup time wherever I’ve lived but it comes with morning sunshine here. Coffee always, breakfast varies, oatmeal on some days, eggs & cheese & fruit on others. Pray by listening to Alistair Begg daily podcast while driving to work. Discovered it in 1994 when it was on radio, now there’s an app.
What happens next? What do you do for lunch?
Surgery. The thyroid and parathyroids in full display. Privilege to be able to do that. Lunch is courtesy of Banner Health surgery lounge often. And on clinic days, lunch blends with dinner. Chocolate is a major food group totally essential at breakfast, lunch or dinner.
What do you do for dinner?
Appreciate that all in my family are amazing cooks. I have all their yummy recipes. Appreciate that my reality during weekdays especially is to juggle cooking for one with the luxury of picking up warm dinner from Flower Child or Café Forte in Old Town Scottsdale, which usually wins.
How do you end the day and what time do you go to bed?
Call family. Tell them I love them. Bedtime varies and days can be long. Google news and world events. During the “work-from-home” phase when non-emergency surgeries were on pause, I discovered Arizona finch and hummingbird nests on my balcony. Was serenaded for weeks in the morning when I would otherwise be at the hospital. So now I make sure the bird food and sugar water are replenished before I go to bed.
What art are you doing and when do you do it?
Photography brings joy. Always has. I take photos pretty much non-stop wherever and whenever. My iPhone says the current photo count is 57,782. The Nikon used to get carried everywhere and downloaded weekly but the new iPhone 11 has amazing camera settings and video editing programs so that’s the go-to choice now. Dream adventure is to visit Hlebine in Croatia to see and hopefully learn oil-on-glass painting in the style of naïve painters like Ivan Vecenaj, Ivan Lackovic, Ivan Rabuzin, Josip Generalic.
What are you reading?
I read audiobooks. Giggling even as I write this but it’s true. When I have the luxury and when caring friends nudge me. Shogun most recent book.
What are you streaming?
Some new and old favorites. NASA When We Left Earth, NOVA The Planets, Making the Cut, The World’s Most Extraordinary Homes, Meru, David Suchet In the Footsteps of St. Paul and St. Peter, BBC’s TimeTeam, The God Who Speaks (2018), NCIS, Stargate
How are you feeling?
Grateful, calm, curious what the future holds
What's the first thing you're going to do when the quarantine ends?
Miss airplanes and flying. And the beach. And people. And museums and art galleries. Will see. Reach out to friends first. The world changed.
