Meet Julia Ghering

Medical Student, Class of 2022

Describe your morning – what time do you get up, what do you do first, next and what is for breakfast?

I normally wake up around 6:45 AM. I had originally planned on getting up earlier during quarantine to prepare for rotations, but I decided I should enjoy sleeping in while I still can. The first thing I do is go put in my contacts because I can see pretty much nothing without them. Breakfast rotates between oatmeal, cereal, and half a bagel. Saturday morning is pancakes day!

What happens next? What do you do for lunch?

Next, I start working on whatever I need to do for the VIC (virtual integrated clerkship) or volunteering. I am very much a morning person, so I try and get as much done as possible sooner in the day. I usually start by reviewing my articles for the COVID-19 LST. Then I do aquifer cases or online MedEd videos. For lunch, I usually take an hour break and try doing something simple like mac-n-cheese or leftovers. After lunch, I work on research, zoom, and finish whatever else needs doing!

What do you do for dinner?

For dinner, my Dad and I eat together and watch an episode of something on Netflix. I thought it would be better to focus on something positive so we worked our way through Parks and Recreation.

How do you end the day and what time do you go to bed?

I end my day by going for a run and showering. It calms me down from the day and I find there’s something very cathartic about literally running away from whatever is on my mind. It’s much easier for me to run at night, once the sun sets. No matter how early I get up, I always feel like it’s way too hot to run in the morning sun. I typically go to bed around 10:30-11:00.

What art are you doing and when do you do it?

I have been doing a lot of sewing and craft projects! I recently finished making a quilt of my medical school t-shirts. For Mother’s Day, I sewed my mom a pair of Illini Mickey Ears. I am also sewing masks together for mask-quaraders. Next up I am making a quilt graduation gift for one of my best friends who just finished undergrad!

What are you reading?

I am currently alternating between 3 different books: Mountains Beyond Mountains, Complications, and I Thought It Was Just Me. I started Mountains Beyond Mountains when I first began medical school but then two years of medical school happened and well here we are. One of the nice things about being home all day is that I finally have a lot more time to read!

What are you streaming?

I recently finished streaming Ozark which was super intense, so I’m lightening things by re-watching the Star Wars films and The Mandalorian.

How are you feeling?

I feel quarantine has been incredibly helpful in teaching me how to feel comfortable with not having control of a situation.

What’s the first thing you’re going to do when the quarantine ends?

I really want to do a race. I had signed up for 3 different runs post-STEP 1 and unfortunately, they were all canceled/became virtual. The atmosphere of a race is just so much fun, everyone’s cheering, supporting each other, and having a good time. I look forward to running with other people by my side again and not having to immediately cross the street every time I see a person.
