Kate Spencer (Bullet journaling)

Updated: Aug 3, 2020

Meet Kate Spencer

Medical Student, Class of 2022, UA COM-P

Describe your morning – what time do you get up, what do you do first, next and what is for breakfast?

I wake up around 7am and head straight for the Nespresso. Breakfast is usually cereal.

What happens next? What do you do for lunch?

After showering/getting ready for the day, I’ll write out my to-do list - the bullet journal comes in very handy for keeping me organized especially during our virtual curriculum when the days all run together. Then I’ll start all the tasks I want to accomplish, usually a mixture of studying, Aquifer modules, and Zoom sessions, depending on the VIC. Lunch is either a sandwich (right now I’m loving smoked turkey + avocado on sourdough) or leftover dinner from the night before.

What do you do for dinner?

Right now I’m in Reno, NV where the weather is wonderful so I’ve been working out outside or going on a long walk with my boyfriend in the evenings either before or after dinner (it’s light out till about 9pm here). Nine times out of ten we're making something from the frozen section of Trader Joe’s. I have historically been the world’s worst cook but it’s something I’ve been working on during quarantine. We've also been trying to support local small restaurants by ordering curbside/delivery once a week.

How do you end the day and what time do you go to bed?

After finishing all my to-do’s for the day, we'll usually call or FaceTime with my parents or with my boyfriend’s family. I head to bed around 10pm.

What art are you doing and when do you do it?

I’ve kept a bullet journal for over a year, but since quarantine I’ve been putting a little more effort into the art aspect of it. It’s mostly doodles using Zebra Mildliners and Micron pens. I’ll usually plan out about two weeks at a time, which includes the cover pages of decoration for the month and whichever VIC rotation is up next. But I’m constantly checking and updating the schedules and to-do tasks throughout the day.

What are you reading?

The House of God, by Samuel Shem - feels as close as I can get to the clinical world right now!

What are you streaming?

Westworld, on HBO.

How are you feeling?

Overall I’m feeling okay, settling into the new reality and trying to find new ways to do things I enjoy. Definitely thankful that all of my family and friends are healthy.

What’s the first thing you’re going to do when the quarantine ends?

One thing I’m missing the most is the yoga studio. But I’m not sure I’ll be eager to go back as soon as it opens, I’ll be taking a more cautious approach to reenter society.
