Meet Megan Cadigan

Medical Student, Class of 2022

Describe your morning – what time do you get up, what do you do first, next and what is for breakfast?

I usually get up around 7 AM and then slowly make my way to the coffee machine where my cat is usually yowling for her breakfast. She likes to roll onto her stomach on the floor and pretend to be cute, but if you dare go in for a pet she darts away and stares at her food bowl. While I make coffee, I give her food and then make myself a bagel. On weekends, however, I am partial to making a full breakfast with eggs, hash browns, fruit since I usually do not have time to do so.

What happens next? What do you do for lunch?

Schoolwork or the occasional socially-distanced errand. Lunch is leftovers, frozen foods, maybe a sandwich.

What do you do for dinner?

Dinner is my favorite part of the day. I usually don’t cook anything elaborate during the schoolyear but being at home has opened time for new recipes and cooking with my boyfriend. I also have been trying to get better at making rice. Everyone says its easy and yet I consistently over or undercook it.

How do you end the day and what time do you go to bed?

I always try to end my day with something relaxing. A book, TV show, doodling, talking to a friend or my boyfriend are usually on the docket. I usually go to bed somewhere between 11 and midnight.

What art are you doing and when do you do it?

I wanted to make a large art piece, but school, COVID, and everything else makes the world feel a little overwhelming and a large art piece felt intimidating. Smaller art pieces were better for maintaining my mental health. Recently I have been making cartoons of myself to express how things are going on a day-to-day basis. I also decided that this was an excellent time to get back into technical work and start drawing things in my house (the cat, a chair etc.) I think that for anyone who wants to start doing art in quarantine, tiny projects are really fun, achievable, and meditative. Plus, you can do them in the evening like I do as a way to de-stress and reflect on the day.

What are you reading?

Right now, I am reading Bonfire of the Vanities by Tom Wolfe. I also read There, There by Tommy Orange earlier this year, which is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. It’s about the urban Native American experience in today’s society, written from the perspective of a diverse character cast trying to make sense of their role in the world. So good!

What are you streaming?

Slowly making my way through the Sopranos with the occasional reality TV binge. Love Island is totally ridiculous and fun.

How are you feeling?

A bit trapped. As a third-year student and as someone who does not like being at home a lot, it’s been really hard coming off dedicated Step 1 study time into what feels like a repeat of dedicated Step 1 study time. But I luckily have an amazing support system and hobbies to keep cabin fever away. Drawing can help a lot with that!

What’s the first thing you’re going to do when the quarantine ends?

Phoenix Art Museum of course!
