Meet Nancy Gwilliam

Director of Operations, COM-Phoenix Basic Medical Sciences

Describe your morning – what time do you get up, what do you do first, next and what is for breakfast?

Up by 6, out the door for a walk or bike ride, then eat, usually and egg with toast, but I love everything bagels.

What happens next? What do you do for lunch?

I’ve set up a sweet home office, so I work in there all day with my constant companion dog. My husband makes me a salad every day, whether I’m at the office or home. Variety in ingredients helps!

What do you do for dinner?

My husband is retired, and he likes to cook, so I eat whatever he fixes. Sometimes it’s not the healthiest food, but how can I complain?

How do you end the day and what time do you go to bed?

In the evening, I work on the quilts I’m making, read, or watch TV, usually nodding off by 10.

What art are you doing and when do you do it?

Quilting is my art. I love the colors, patterns, and even the feel of fabrics. I do the piecing to create the top, as well as sewing it all together on my longarm sewing machine to make the quilt. Also, I’ve made about 100 masks for family, friends, and people who asked for them. I converted my living room to a sewing room and haven’t looked back.

What are you reading? Currently, The Silent Patient. Just finished Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine.

What are you streaming?

Nature shows and almost anything PBS. I also watched the entire series of Madam Secretary since this all started.

How are you feeling?

Better lately. At first, I felt so isolated, afraid to call or Skype people, in case I was disturbing them. Now I reach out to colleagues when I need something and hope they’ll jump on video with me.

What’s the first thing you’re going to do when the quarantine ends?

Hug my grandkids. 4 live in the area. We’ve only been around one, and that’s just been in the last couple of weeks; the father of the other 3 has recently recovered from COVID-19, so we’ve just waved through the window. Also, going camping. Getting out!
